Heads buried in the sand

While I understand the desire of most Kenyans to return to peace after the traumatic violence of the past few months, I can’t help feeling that many of us are ignoring the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. We are like the proverbial ostrich that wants to bury its head in the sand and wish all its problems away.

Contrary to popular belief, the post-election violence did not happen simply because of contested election results. Secondly, Kenya was not simply a peaceful, prosperous nation before the violence broke out. To make these two claims is to ignore the experiences of Kenyans of all tribes and races who have fought hard to bring social justice to our nation.

We are on trial at this moment in Kenyan history. The world's eyes are on us. If we are able to move forward and actually implement the agreement signed by the two parties, then we will pave the way for more equitable distribution of resources. If we continue haggling over the terms of the agreement, refusing to see beyond our petty politics and greed, then history will judge us harshly.
